A Study on the Symbol of Unconsciousness in Chagall's Works
Kang Mi-Hwa

Abstract
In this study, the works of Marc Chagall(1887¢¦1985), who was a Jewish Russian painter, were analyzed from the viewpoint of analytical psychology. Analytical psychology regards artistic creativity as being originated from the common collective unconsciousness of human beings beyond the personal spirit of an artist. And art was considered to be an expression of a symbolic system, in which the person could perceive the collective unconsciousness of human beings. From the perspective of analytical psychology, the reason of why Chagall's works attract our attention is that his abundant symbols may represent the language of unconsciousness in the depths of human psyche. In Chagall's works, the archetypes of collective unconsciousness were expressed in various symbols and these symbols revealed the dynamics of unconsciousness. His art was based on creative inspiration arisen by anima and included various symbols of Self-archetypes which reflected the transcendental functions and the wholeness of human psyche. Also, Chagall's art activates the healing power which results from the symbolization by the interaction between unconsciousness and consciousness. The symbol can play a role of the most effective medium that indicates the healing process of psyche which gets out of discord and unbalance to search for integration and balance. The creative unconscious is not only an exclusive property of artists but also the original mental capacity that all human beings possess. Therefore, the integration of the healing power of creative activity and the basic human instinct for self-realization is the most important element and the theoretical base of art therapy.
